Bathtub Refinishing explained
To understand what bathtub refinishing is. We need to first understand what bathtub refinishing is not. It is not the process of painting a bathtub. Not the use of Epoxy paint. It is not the use of Acrylic Urethane paint. The only reason the epoxy paint kits sold in home improvement stores are able to say 'Refinishing' is because that word is defined as reapplying a finish to a surface. Even if it is not the correct finish... it still is actually refinishing.
We can look at what the Professional Bathtub Refinishing Association recommends for refinishing and you will see that fluoropolymer coatings which are injected with polyester and silicone resin is the correct coating for the bathtub and tile refinishing professional.
This is the exact coating I use and there is a lot more that goes into it besides the correct coating! Please take a minute and see my main site for an explanation of how bathtub and tile should be refinished and who says they should be refinished this way and why. Also I will describe the exact process I use to refinish bathtubs and tile.
Epoxy paint was used for bathtub and tile painting out of desperation! Multi-housing communities and hotels needed a fix for bathtubs that were damaged, discolored and worn. It's not hard to imagine the situation. To remove and replace a bathtub in a single story home is a huge under taking but just think of the apartment Industry! Trying to manipulate a bathtub that was installed before the finish carpentry, meaning doors would have to be widened, possibly a wall torn down and then replaced! It would be a financial disaster!
